The Best Picture Race is Wide Open
Okay, so I've given you my educated guesses (or in some case just hunches) as to who will win in the 'major' categories. Jennifer Hudson will most likely win Best Supporting Actress. I've picked an upset in the Best Supporting Actor race with Alan Arkin beating out Eddie Murphy. And favorites Forest Whitaker and Helen Mirren will win in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories. Which just leaves my picks for Best Director and Best Picture Oscars. Without any further ado, here's how I see those two races playing out.
The Departed will finally earn Martin Scorsese the Oscar he's deserved for years. I believe the voters will be thinking along the lines of 'if not now, when?' and even if they don't believe The Departed is his strongest film, they will award him the Oscar for Best Director.
Choosing Scorsese for director knocks The Departed off the Best Picture list, leaving The Queen, Babel, Little Miss Sunshine, and Letters from Iwo Jima to battle it out. Unlike previous years, there's no real front-runner. The Queen is a good film but Mirren's performance is what sells it, so honoring her in the individual category should be enough for this film. There's been very little Best Picture buzz surrounding Letters from Iwo Jima, even though Eastwood's a favorite with Academy voters. Take those three out and it becomes a two-horse race between Babel and Little Miss Sunshine. Both films feature incredible ensemble casts and both films have earned their share of awards leading up to the Oscars (including a Best Feature Film win for Sunshine at the Spirit Awards). There won't be a tie so I'm leaning toward the winner being Little Miss Sunshine by a nose. But this is one year I can honestly say I won't be disappointed no matter which film winds up winning.
